Annette Freeman was born in Bamberg, South Carolina on February 12, 1933 to the late Charlie Williams and Lucinda Cann Williams. Annette was the first born of seven siblings. She moved with her family to New York City at the age of ten. She was educated in the New York City Public School system. She and her sister Elizabeth, both attended Jamaica Vocational High School for Girls in Queens, NY. In High School Annette acquired a passion for sewing. After graduating she could be found making patterns and outfits for family and friends
In 1954 Annette married Henry Freeman. To this union three children were born, Kathy, Darryll, and Judith. They raised their children in Brooklyn, Lafayette Gardens, for over 20 years. In 1979 they moved to Queens, Rochdale Village and remained there for over 20 years. After the passing of her son Darryll and her husband Henry she relocated to Virginia and lived with her daughter Judith.
At a young age, Annette was baptized at Macedonia AME church, Flushing Queens. Around 1972 she joined Evening Star Baptist Church, Brooklyn New York. She was very active. She was a member of the Deaconess Board, Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, Senior Choir and was the Supervisor to the Youth Ensemble Choir for many years. She loved her young people and they loved her. Annette was a powerful advisor and mentor whose influence touched the lives of youth and adults alike. She had a rare gift with an ability to connect with anyone without judgment, offering pure love, understanding, and wisdom filled with God’s anointing. And if no one else could understand or reach you, Sister Freeman, Ms. Freeman, Aunt Annette, Mom, or Nana absolutely could. Her presence made people feel seen, understood, and uplifted. Especially if she crocheted and gave you a blanket with her love. While at Evening Star she attended classes at the newly formed Eastern Baptist Association School of Religion. Every Saturday morning, she was in class from 8am to 3pm and she loved it. She graduated with a 2-year Christian Education Certificate. She enjoyed studying and learning about the Bible.
Upon relocating to Virginia, she became a member of Antioch Baptist Church. In 2010 a new church plant, Immanuel Christian Ministries, was born. With excitement to join and work in that ministry she became the president of the Deacon Board and one of the Sunday School teachers to the youth. She delivered several Sunday morning messages that touched and transformed lives. While at Immanuel, she studied and received another certificate in Christian Education from Progressive National Baptist Convention.
Throughout her professional career Annette worked at the Brooklyn Soap factory and was a New York City School Crossing Guard. In 1968 Annette was hired at the New York City Department of Health, Data Processing Unit. She remained there until retirement in 1994.
Annette loved God, her family, church families and she traveled extensively with her sister-friends, known as the Clusters. She loved spending time with her family at Timothy Lake cabins in Pennsylvania, and other resorts. She played Mahjong with her sisters, weekly. She was truly family-oriented and loved going places and being around people.
In her later years she started experiencing some health challenges, but that did not stop her. She became a dialysis patient. After dialysis most patients go home and rest. After Annette had dialysis, she was always ready to go somewhere. She would say, “let’s ride to see so and so.” Or “if the car is moving, I’m in it.”
However, in these last few months after enduring and overcoming additional health challenges, Annette peacefully departed this life on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025. Surrounded by the love and the presence of her family and friends, she transitioned into her new life in glory. Being with family on holidays was something she always loved, and she left this world wrapped in that same love and unity.
