Ella Frances Lane Kay, affectionately known to all as "Miss Ella," passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on August 17, 1946, in Culpeper, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Robert Dan Lane and Virginia Lane Bundy.
On August 24, 1968, Ella married her beloved husband, Robert "Bobby" Kay, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly six decades. Together, they became beloved fixtures in their community, known affectionately as "Miss Ella and Mr. Bobby," often seen traveling around town in their distinctive Mini Cooper.
For more than 40 years, Ella devoted her life to the care and nurturing of children as a professional childcare provider. The children she cared for, along with their parents, became extended family, a testament to the love and dedication she brought to her life's work. Her warmth, patience, and genuine affection made her not simply a caregiver, but a treasured presence in the lives of generations of families.
Ella found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She delighted in camping adventures with her family, tending to her beautiful flowers, and lavishing love upon her granddaughters. Her passion for Mickey Mouse and all things Disney was well known, as was her enthusiasm for decorating her home for every holiday season. Her home was a landmark of seasonal cheer, adorned year-round with coordinating garden flags and festive displays that brought smiles to all who passed by.
A devoted member of Shiloh Old Site Baptist Church, Ella was an active and faithful presence in her church family. She took particular pride in decorating the church window for holidays, bringing beauty and celebration to her place of worship. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and her service to her church reflected her spirit.
Ella is survived by her beloved husband Robert Kay of Fredericksburg, Virginia, her loving daughter, Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt of Alexandria, Virginia, and two cherished granddaughters, Billie Wyatt of New York City, New York, and Temple Wyatt of Fredericksburg, Virginia. She also leaves behind devoted sisters and brothers: Jannette "Pat" Rogers (late Walter "Sony" Rogers) of Leon, Virginia; Rosa Lee Stanley (Nathaniel Jasper), Dorothy “Finney” Scott (Earl) and Carolyn Grayson, of Culpeper, Virginia; and one brother, Gerald “Jerry” Lane of Charlottesville, Virginia, and sister-in-law Patsy Lane of Culpeper, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert "Bobby" Lane. Ella also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family and countless friends whose lives she touched.
Ella Frances Lane Kay will be remembered for her boundless love, her generous heart, her devotion to children and family, and the joy she brought to her community. She transformed ordinary moments into celebrations and made everyone who knew her feel like family. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, service, and warmth will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know "Miss Ella."
The family will receive family and friends on Saturday, February 21, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Shiloh Old Site Baptist Church, 801 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
