Freddie Willie SHANKS SR.

Freddie Willie Shanks, Sr. (77) Born – Raised and Died in Reva, Virginia...The “Mayor” of Reva is gone.  Freddie was born on October 3, 1944 and departed his life on Friday, February 4, 2022 as he wished - in his home in Reva surrounded by his loving family.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 54 years, Caroline V. White Shanks. His children Freddie W. Shanks, Jr., Stephen L. Shanks, Sr. and Yolanda Shanks; sisters:  Rebecca Shanks Apperson, Josephine Shanks Carpenter (Hilray) and Mary G. Shanks Simpson; sister-in-law Doris Shanks, brother-in-law Delbert Noakes and his Aunt Grace Johnson.  His 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren will truly miss their “Gramps”, “Meow” or “BDB”.  He also leaves to cherish his memory, his White Family in-laws, a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Henry Shanks, Sr.  and Pearl Virginia Johnson Shanks, brothers; Robert Henry Shanks, Jr. and Calvin Shanks (Mary), sisters; Mattie Shanks Noakes and Geneva Shanks Johnson (Charles); brothers-in-law; Carroll Apperson and Robert Simpson and his beloved daughter Kimberly Shanks.

He was educated in the Culpeper County School System.  Freddie was a member of Canaan Baptist Church in Reva.  He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for over 35 years with Morauer & Hartzell, JE Miller and Dynasty Excavation. He was a member of Local Union 77 (43 years retired) and Local 105 for three.  After retirement in 2005 he purchased his own back-hoe and started working with his good friend, Johnnie Johnson, at Horizon Funeral Home.

Freddie loved sports of all kinds.  He was so proud to play slow-pitch softball with the Reva Team, Jack and Lee’s Crew and the Sperryville Tigers up until his mid 60’s!  He was his happiest while watching his kids and grandkids play; almost as much as watching his Dallas Cowboys.  He rarely missed any sporting event held in Culpeper County.

Anyone that knew Freddie knew he was very entertaining; a natural comedian.  He was a jokester that didn’t mind “stretching the truth” to get a laugh.  He was truly the life of the party and he will be sorely missed by all. 

A visitation will be held Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Horizon Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral services will be on  Friday,February 11, 2022 at Culpeper Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with a visitation at 10:00 am. Burial will be in Reva Virginia.
