Janeice McNeill Obituary

Janeice Yvonne “Missie” McNeill was born on April 6, 1965, in Washington, D.C., to Gloria McNeill and the late James “Jimmy” McNeill. She was educated in the D.C. public school system and graduated from McKinley Tech High School.

Soon after graduation, Missie answered the call to serve her country by enlisting in the United States Army. As a petroleum supply specialist, she tackled a demanding and gritty job—but true to form, she made it look good. Over the course of 20 years of honorable service, she achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG) and was stationed in Colorado, Kentucky, Germany, and Wisconsin. Her fondest memories weren’t just about the places she served—they were about the lifelong bonds she built with fellow soldiers. Among them were her sisters-in-arms Elizabeth, Ernestine, and First Sergeant LaGree, who became family in every way. Their connection was rooted in loyalty, laughter, and shared strength.

After retiring from the military, Missie continued her dedication to public service as a federal employee with the General Services Administration (GSA), where she contributed her skills, integrity, and tireless work ethic until her civilian retirement.

Missie shared a powerful and loving life partnership with Abraham Rice. Their relationship was grounded in deep friendship, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they navigated life’s highs and lows with grace and devotion.

Missie was a woman of beauty, boldness, humor, and a big heart. A devoted mother and grandmother, she lived for her family. She was also a gifted seamstress who poured love into every stitch—tailoring everything from outfits and handbags to bed linens for those closest to her. She had a true passion for thrifting and always believed: “Once you find the shoes, the rest will follow.”

She loved music—it was her heartbeat. Whether it was go-go, R&B, soul, or old-school hits, Missie could be found dancing at a live show, vibing in the house, or singing along while she sewed. Her soundtrack was always on point.

When it came to food, Missie kept it classic. Breakfast was her favorite meal of the day, and she couldn’t do without a good cup of coffee. Her go-to dish? A hearty, home-cooked plate of steak and potatoes—shared with love, conversation, and laughter.

Missie was also a fierce advocate for wellness and self-care. She believed in nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and was always checking in, offering support, or sharing something that might lift someone else up. She had a way of showing up for others even when she carried her own burdens quietly. That was her nature: to give deeply, love openly, and uplift constantly.

Her love extended far beyond bloodlines. She shared sibling-like bonds with her first cousins—the Stauntons, Robinsons, and McNeills—who were raised as brothers and sisters. She adored her aunts and uncles, whose love knew no bounds. She held a special place in her heart for her Godchildren, whom she mentored and celebrated as her own.

Missie also had a lifelong love for animals and was especially close to her cherished dog Ziggy, the loyal Maltese who remained faithfully by her side.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Her loving daughter, Gabrielle Burns; Grandchildren: Rashaan Burns, Judah Burns, Amiyi Maxwell, Amiri Maxwell, and Noelle Maxwell; Her mother, Gloria McNeill; Sisters: Francisca “Lady” McNeill, Kelli Jenkins, and Anndrea “Andy” Jenkins; Aunts and uncles: Aunt Pat Johnson, Uncle Jack Johnson, and Julia Johnson; Life partner: Abraham Rice; And a wide circle of first cousins, Godchildren, extended family, dear friends, and her beloved Army family.

She was preceded in death by her father, James “Jimmy” McNeill; her bonus parent, William “Boodie” Jenkins; her grandmother, Mabel Johnson; her grandfather, Jack Johnson; aunts Carrie Robinson, Jackie Johnson, Lavern Adams, Dorothy Staunton; and Uncle Tony Staunton.

Missie lived with style, purpose, and joy. She showed up for her people, followed her own rhythm, and lived fully, freely, and with no regrets—rooted in her truth and guided by her faith. Her presence was powerful. Her absence is deeply felt. But her legacy—of love, service, strength, and intention—lives on in all who were blessed to know her.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21
