Jovan Torbic Obituary

Jovan Myles Torbic, “JoeApe”, 62, of Culpeper, Virginia passed away March 22, 2023, at Hospice of Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia surrounded by his children.

Joe was born on September 04, 1960, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Myles Torbic and Rena Mae Simms. Growing up, Joe spent most days clearing fields in Juniper, Georgia with his dad and loved playing football. Most people don’t know, but Joe was a great student and a good artist. After his dad passed, Joe spent a lot of time with his Uncle Nick helping him make fudge and candy to sell at carnivals. Making fudge and candy was just the start of his love for cooking and baking. Cheesecakes were a specialty of his and everyone loved them.  He was even able to start a small business alongside his daughter-in-law selling them.

Joe was an avid sports fan. He loved playing darts (although he stopped when his kids got better than him), golf and watching football and baseball.  He also coached his kids’ sports teams when they were younger. The Atlanta Falcons, Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves were his favorite teams. He was lucky enough to attend several games throughout his life – GO DAWGS!

Joe loved music and would dance any chance he got. He was a kind soul with a huge heart. His children and grandchildren were what he loved most. His children came to love all his favorite songs. One song they all loved to sing together was “My Ding-a-Ling” by Chuck Berry!

Joe was a skilled carpenter and decks were a specialty of his. All his children at one point or another helped him build at least one. When Joe wasn’t working, he was on a golf course with his friends and kids or watching a sporting event of some sort. Recently he was able to locally join The Fraternal Order of Eagles #4551 where he enjoyed trivia nights, Coors Light, family and friends.

Joe is survived by his children Joe Torbic Jr (Crystal), April Thompson (Matthew), Taylor Torbic, Scooter Lowe, and Sandi Doremus (Hunter). His 21 grandchildren Gabe, Ashlynn, Haley, Alexis, Matthew Jr., Mylee, Andrew, Ryleigh, Ivie, Arlee, Isla, Liam, Caleb, Angel, Harry, Shaylynn, Lucy, Faith, Elijah, Mia, Maddie, and 5 great grandchildren. Joe is survived by his sisters Joyce Livingston (Ed), Cherrie Torbic, Toni Glumsic (Fred), and Marsha Torbic, 7 nieces and nephews, and a host of close friends.

Joe is predeceased by his Father and Mother, Grandmother “Minnie Ma”, Daughter Dixie, Granddaughter Cheyenne, and Nephew Tyler.

Joe will receive friends and family at Horizon Funeral Home March 30, 2023, from 11am-12pm. Services will begin at 12pm with Repass to follow at The Fraternal Order of Eagles #4551 in Culpeper, VA.
