Rebecca Shanks Apperson, affectionately known as Becky a longtime resident of Reva, Virginia (Shanktown) passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Culpeper Rehabilitation Center in Culpeper VA..
She was born August 5, 1939, to the late Henry R. Shanks, Sr. and the late Peral Johnson Shanks. Becky was educated in the Culpeper County Public School System. In 1954 Becky graduated from George Washington Carver Regional High School, Rapidan, VA. Becky was a very active member of the George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni until her failing health no longer let her participate.
Becky became a member of Canaan Baptist Church accepting Christ at an early age through baptism under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. John A. Holmes, Sr. Becky was a good and faithful servant of Canaan. Becky served as Trustee and Financial Secretary, she was a member of the Choir for more than 50 years, she was President of the Missionary Ministry, the choir, the custodian, the Women’s Ministry, and also President of The Genevieve Colman Glascoe Scholarship Ministry. Becky also worked on numerous fundraiser projects to enhance the church and beautify the grounds. One of her major projects was building the church pavilion, helping to upgrade the restrooms, and helping to install stained glass windows. Without a doubt, Becky was a gifted singer and had an amazing memorable alto voice. She loved singing and she shared her talent in many church services throughout the Culpeper/Reva area. She was often requested to sing for various weddings, funerals, and other occasions. Singing was her God-given gift and calling. Becky loved to cook, you name it she cooked it!!! Especially her Bread Pudding, Pound Cake, and her signature Crabmeat Salad. Becky enjoyed all church fellowship activities. She loved her pastor and her church family. Her most important jewels were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved and cherished.
Becky was a domestic worker in Northern VA and Culpeper County, Virginia for more than 40 years. After graduation, she married her childhood sweetheart of 61 years Carroll Apperson, Sr. From this union she had four wonderful children; (2) daughters: Lutricia and Cheryl, (2) sons: Carroll, Jr and Kevin.
In addition to her parents, Becky was preceded in death by her two youngest children Cheryl and Kevin Apperson; (2) sisters Mattie S. Noakes (Delbert) and Geneva S. Johnson (Charles Sr.-Deceased) : (3) brothers: Robert H. Jr. (Doris) Shanks, Freddie, Sr. Shanks (Caroline W) and Calvin, Sr. Shanks (Mary- Deceased).
Becky leaves to cherish her loving memory; her two adult children Carroll, Jr (Gwen) Apperson and Lutricia A. Toliver (James, deceased); (6) grandchildren: Robert, CJ, Charles Michael, Adrian, DeSean, Angela; (13) great-grandchildren; two sisters Mary S. Simpson of Fredericksburg, Va., Josephine S. Carpenter (Hillary) of Slate Mills, Va.; (1) aunt Grace Johnson of Culpeper, Va. A host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless devoted friends.
Family Visitation will be on Friday, May 26, 2023 from 6PM - 8PM at Horizon Funeral Home 750 Old Brandy Rd, Culpeper, VA 540.825.9838. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Center - 15044 Ryland Chapel Road, Rixeyville, VA. Funeral Service will began at 11:00 A.M.
