Samuel Thurston Obituary

Samuel Thurston, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this life peacefully, having lived a life full of hard work, love, and deep     commitment to his family and faith. Born on November 21, 1940, he was the son of the late Paul Edward Thurston Sr. and Dorothy Thurston of Mineral, Virginia.

Samuel was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Ann Fleming Thurston, with whom he shared many cherished years. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Lillie May Berkeley, Mildred Harris, Lena Bell Shelton, and  Clarence Lindwood Thurston Sr., as well as his brothers-in-law: Hugh  Berkeley, Jordan Osco Shelton. Deceased nephews: Calvin Harris, Frank  Harris, Xavier Eligah White and granddaughter Latoya V Thurston.

He is lovingly remembered by his living siblings: Paul Edward Thurston Jr. and Clarisa Shelton, both Mineral, Virginia, and his half-sister, Pauline Parker of Forestville, Maryland. He is also survived by his dear aunts, Delores Johnson and Nannie Johnson, who reside in Mineral, Virginia.

Samuel and Roberta were blessed with a loving family. He leaves to cherish his memory of his children: Samuel Thurston and his wife Gwendolyn of Spotsylvania, Virginia; Linda Thurston and Larry of Mineral, Virginia;  Marlene Woodford of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Seline Thurston, also of Charlottesville, Virginia.

He was the proud grandfather of seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He is also remembered with love by his special friend and longtime companion, Linda Henderson of Montpelier, Virginia, who stood by his side with unwavering support, love and care.

Samuel Thurston was educated in the Louisa County Public Schools and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age, joining Laurel Hill Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon. Though he may not have attended every Sunday, his faith was unwavering, and he maintained a personal relationship with God throughout his life. He often found spiritual nourishment through the teachings of Bishop T.D. Jakes.

A man of immense work ethic, Samuel began his career as a cook at a restaurant in Washington, D.C., where he worked diligently during the week. However, his true passion was in working outdoors and building with his hands. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to create and operate his own businesses. He owned and managed a     successful tractor trailer business for many years, which included dump trucks and road backs. Later in life, he  transitioned to a smaller business with two trucks, continuing to work until just weeks before his passing.

Samuel was known for his humble heart, fierce loyalty to family, and unmatched determination. His personality was strong, and his presence unforgettable. If you ever saw him upset, you knew it—but behind that strength was a man with deep love and compassion for those around him.

He was a legendary host, known for his grand cookouts filled with delicious food, live bands, DJs, and laughter. His daughter Linda was always by his side making sure everyone was well-fed and cared for. Those cookouts were so abundant that the food would last until the next day. They were more than gatherings—they were memories made with love.

To know Samuel was to admire him. To his family, he was “Superman”- early to bed, early to rise, and always working hard to support those he loved. Even in his final months, he never stopped moving, never stopped giving.

In addition to his immediate family, Samuel is mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness, work ethic, and devotion.

We take comfort in knowing that God granted him his promised years and then some. We believe, with certainty, that he has made it into Heaven, where he now watches over his family with the same strength, love, and grace he gave them in life.
